On May 1954, a riot broke out in Singapore, involving a number of Singaporean Chinese students. The British colonial government in Singapore passed the National Service Ordinance, requiring all males aged between 18 and 20 to register by May 1954 for part-time National Service, those who failed to register would be either jailed or fined. Thousands of secondary school students from Chinese schools were influenced by communists ideals and unwilling to defend the colonial government. On the first day of registration, very few students from Chung Cheng High School turned up.
On 13 May 1954, 500 students gathered in front of the Government House to present their petiton to the Governor seeking exemption from conscription which turned into riot, while another 1,000 students locked themselves in Chung Cheng High School. More than 26 students were injured and 48 were arrested by the police.
This in an important event as it brought unity between the students in Chung Cheng High School.
